City of Sanford
The golf links of the Mayfair Country Club had their beginnings in 1921 when the city of Sanford laid out the 18-hole course, which was played by many of the big name touring professionals of the day including Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer and the Hebert Brothers. The property was subsequently sold to the New York Baseball Giants, who operated the golf course along with their baseball training camp and the Mayfair Inn, which now houses the New Tribes Mission in downtown Sanford. The Sanford Naval Air Station, built in 1941 and deeded by the federal government to the City of Sanford in 1969, has remained active and contributed to the growth of the area. Today, the 1,900 acre Orlando Sanford Airport welcomes over one million passengers per year on charter and scheduled airline flights. Approximately 60 companies are located in the airport's industrial park.
